The New Practices Committee of the AIA New York Chapter launches design competition

New York, NY - 2013-11-26

The AIA New York Chapter's New Practices Committee launched their New Practices New York 2014 competition yesterday with the panel discussion (P)RE:Think | Competitive Ideas. At the launch event, speakers discussed the shifting role of the architectural competition.

New Practices New York 2014 is the fifth iteration of the biennial portfolio competition sponsored by the New Practices Committee of the AIA New York Chapter. The competition identifies firms with unique and innovative strategies in both projects and practices. Architecture and design firms founded since 2004 and located within the five boroughs of New York City are encouraged to submit a practice narrative and a mini-portfolio of built, un-built, or theoretical work. An exhibition of works by the winning practices will open at the Center for Architecture on October 1, 2014.


* Recognition with the New Practices New York award

* A stipend for an installation and exhibition at the Center for Architecture

* Media exposure through media partner The Architects Newspaper

* The opportunity to participate in promotional symposia and lectures

* A one-year membership in the AIA New York Chapter

* Access to the AIA New York Chapter's New Practices Committee, a successful and engaging platform for young practices in New York


The competition jury will include:

Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Architect, AZPA, Dean, Architectural Design, Princeton University

Elaine Molinar, AIA, Director Strategic Planning and Business Development, Snøhetta

Jing Liu, Principal, SO-IL

Lucia Allais, Assistant Professor, History and Theory of Architecture, Princeton University

William Menking, Editor-in-Chief, Architects Newspaper

* New practices are defined as architecture and design firms that have been founded after 2004

* Selected firms must be located within the 5 boroughs of New York City

* All work for built projects must credit the architect of record for the project on the individual portfolio page

* Theoretical and un-built work is welcome and encouraged
